Star Light Star Bright

Star Light Star Bright, first star I see tonight, Wish I may, Wish I might have the wish I wish tonight. That was a saying I knew as a child. And I believed it to some extent, just like wishing on a wishbone from a chicken. One time, I wished for a bike. I got it! I never rode it, though; for it was broken (I can't remember what). But, time or money never let it be fixed so it just sat there until it was tossed. I guess that goes along with the saying to be careful for what you wish (or pray) for!
Anyway, I saw a lone bright star in the sky last night after church and ... yes, I made a wish on it .... just for fun.

My Granny

Speaking of ‘keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road', when my husband and I were courting, one of my aunts (from my other family) died and my parents gave us permission to come to Georgia to the funeral. We stopped to visit my granny (my mom’s mom) while in town. When we were leaving, Granny looked at Steve and said those words. He has never forgotten them. The other thing he remembers her saying to him was: After we were married he grew a mustache. Her church believes a man should be clean shaven. Her comment was, “You look like you swallowed a horse and left the tail hanging out.” Now, both comments were said in a sweet way and he fondly remembers her for them. I miss my Granny.

Dumb things

I wake up listening to GPB radio. Georgia Public Broadcasting. This morning it was news. The first two things I heard were:


#1 Some part of our government is discussing the legalities of texting while driving. What a waste of time! Of course, you are not to do that. How can you do that and 'keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road' which is what I learned in driver's ed more than 40 years ago?! Why does our government have to waste time with that issue?

#2 Another announcement is that a certain college does not have to give some assessment test now which tests a student’s knowledge of basic skills (they said reading and writing). I thought college was for 'higher learning' and that a student would, of course, know how to read and write before applying to attend class!

Frugal

When one of our daughters was a teen ager, she told me that I would be good in the ‘Little House on the Prairie Days’. Why? Because I knew how to make things last and to make do with what we had. I did that because we had to make things last and go farther because of our choice for me to stay home and be a housewife. (Today, that is called stay-at-home-mom).


Last week in the office, a comment was made about being frugal and a 22-yr old said, “What is frugal?” I looked at the young man, and said with a smile, “A word that your generation does not know.” Then we explained what it meant and he agreed with me.

I know some young people today do know what that means, but it seems so much is given to today’s youth that I fear for them if they ever truly have to make ends meet.

First Butterfly 2010

It is not the first one I've seen, but the first one I've seen with camera in hand. I went out to look at my azaleas in full bloom and the butterfly put on a show for me and even lit long enough for several photos.

BTW, this is my 100th post.

Are we doing too much?

A quote that is in this book. A quote that I have used for over ten years to remind me of my limits when I or others try to make me do more than I know I can do physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually.

I pledge allegiance

The list below is from a page about Red Skelton. There is a audio file and a movie file with him telling the story behind the list. Well worth watching!!!  I Pledge Allegiance  I know 'under God' is not listed, but it was not in the pledge when first written. It was added later. Listen to the sound track or movie and Mr. Skelton expounds on it.

I----meaning me, an individual, a committee of one.

Pledge----dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity.
Allegiance----my love and my devotion.
To the Flag----our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.
Of the United----that means that we have all come together.
States----individual communities that have united into 48 great states. 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common cause, and that's love of country.
Of America.
And to the Republic----a republic, a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

One nation----meaning, so blessed by God.
Indivisible----incapable of being divided.
With Liberty----which is freedom and the right of power to live one's life without threats or fear or any sort of retaliation.
And justice----The principle and quality of dealing fairly with others.
For all.----which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine."

hello

Just thought I'd peek in and say hello. Work is going ok. Colds are going around the office, so now I have it. We keep swapping office space, phones, pens etc. Have been home for the weekend and 2 more days trying to get better. Am going back today and see how it goes. I hope they have the air conditioner fixed!
I miss my blogger friends! I'll check in again someday. hehehehe

Back and Forth

My mom told me to be careful driving back and to to work. I told her I would. Then I grinned. I know that is what we say, but shouldn't it be to and back? Or ... are we going back to work and then to home? Whichever, I will be careful going to and back.

He or She?

Why do we have to use both? I know in our modern world and with women’s rights we cannot only say ‘he’ all the time. But why both? Why not ‘she’ sometimes and ‘he’ sometimes? Why use both each and every time? Actually, each and every bothers me too, but that is a different story.
The Bible refers to the human race as ‘man.’ I never had a problem knowing what ‘man’ meant. Since a child, I knew and understood ‘man’ meant mankind. Or, is that mankind or womankind?
Actually, it is fine and proper to use he for the pronoun all the time. I am not highly educated, but I do not think of he as only males when I read a book or article. Does higher education make people that picky? Maybe there is something to just good old horse sense. With all the new dictionaries containing so many new words why can’t someone devise one word to represent ‘he or she’? But then, I guess he or she has not thought of it!

New Job

I guess the title should be just 'job'. I did not have another one outside my home. I started work (temporary). I am working in an office. I have not worked in an office atmosphere for 38 years!! I have been a full-time housewife since 6 months after getting married except for a couple little things now and then, but none like this one. I was told it was a temp-job up to 35 hrs a week, but when I arrived I was told it was a 40-hr a week job with no extra benefits. OK, I will try to handle that. 2 days are behind me and God is helping me learn what I am to do.

I've worked 4 days now and so the first week is behind me. So far, so good.
