Unmentionables

No, I do not mean age or weight. I’m talking about underclothing. When I was in high-school in the 1960s we called brassieres, bras. We still do but why did we do it back then? The word brassiere was taboo. You did not mention that word just like you did mention (or show) private body parts, especially in mixed company. There was a lady on television who used to advertise a certain bra. She showed it over her outer-clothing. Times have changed. Now people wear all sorts of tops that are supposed to be an outer-wear and they cover less than that bra did!
Then there are the panties, or as when I was a kid, we call them step-ins. Why? Logical. They used to cover you whole bottom. Now it seems its fashion show your panty lines through your outer-clothing.
SLIPS (in another post this same day)
Then lastly, but not least there are the pantyhose. Have you ever done a pull-wiggle? You know, during the day the material has stretched and started sliding down your body. You try to discreetly pull up on them to get them back into place.
Sometimes, I put them on without realizing I turn one leg around until it is almost on. They are our such a pain, and I hate taking them off to change it so stubbornly I decide to wear them the way they are. After walking around for a few moments, I feel like my leg is crooked, and finally give in to take care the problem.
Then what happens when you get a run in one leg of your pantyhose? It’s a shame to throw them away. The other leg is still good. So you save it until you have two of the same shade. Then you can cut off the bad legs and wear them together. If it is the kind that make you look slimmer than that you can look twice as slim. Right?
I have started wearing knee-highs. With them, you have to make sure your dress is long enough to cover them, so you do not look like an old lady with her socks sliding down her leg. But, then, I am getting to be an old lady, so why does it matter? And, you have to make sure the colors of each match.
One Sunday morning at church, though, I was able to bless someone when the knee-highs did match. During the church service, I noticed that I had on a black one and a navy blue one. I also noticed that there was a younger woman who looked a little depressed. After church, I went and sat down beside her. After exchanging pleasantries, I pulled up the hem of my dress a little and told her to look at my nylons. She had a good laugh and it helped her feel better.

Peace Plant

Sometimes called a promise plant. I acquired one a couple months ago and I find that it needs a lot of water. Well, more than I give the other plants and they survive my lack of 'plant care ability'. I thought this morning, 'but is not that what PEACE needs is a lot of TLC.' hummmm?

My Granny

Speaking of ‘keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road', when my husband and I were courting, one of my aunts (from my other family) died and my parents gave us permission to come to Georgia to the funeral. We stopped to visit my granny (my mom’s mom) while in town. When we were leaving, Granny looked at Steve and said those words. He has never forgotten them. The other thing he remembers her saying to him was: After we were married he grew a mustache. Her church believes a man should be clean shaven. Her comment was, “You look like you swallowed a horse and left the tail hanging out.” Now, both comments were said in a sweet way and he fondly remembers her for them. I miss my Granny.

Dumb things

I wake up listening to GPB radio. Georgia Public Broadcasting. This morning it was news. The first two things I heard were:

#1 Some part of our government is discussing the legalities of texting while driving. What a waste of time! Of course, you are not to do that. How can you do that and 'keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road' which is what I learned in driver's ed more than 40 years ago?! Why does our government have to waste time with that issue?

#2 Another announcement is that a certain college does not have to give some assessment test now which tests a student’s knowledge of basic skills (they said reading and writing). I thought college was for 'higher learning' and that a student would, of course, know how to read and write before applying to attend class!

Well, good morning and welcome to our mixed up world!

Frugal

When one of our daughters was a teen ager, she told me that I would be good in the ‘Little House on the Prairie Days’. Why? Because I knew how to make things last and to make do with what we had. I did that because we had to make things last and go farther because of our choice for me to stay home and be a housewife. (Today, that is called stay-at-home-mom).

Last week in the office, a comment was made about being frugal and a 22-yr old said, “What is frugal?” I looked at the young man, and said with a smile, “A word that your generation does not know.” Then we explained what it meant and he agreed with me.

I know some young people today do know what that means, but it seems so much is given to today’s youth that I fear for them if they ever truly have to make ends meet.

New Job

I guess the title should be just 'job'. I did not have another one outside my home. I started work (temporary). I am working in an office. I have not worked in an office atmosphere for 38 years!! I have been a full-time housewife since 6 months after getting married except for a couple little things now and then, but none like this one. I was told it was a temp-job up to 35 hrs a week, but when I arrived I was told it was a 40-hr a week job with no extra benefits. OK, I will try to handle that. 2 days are behind me and God is helping me learn what I am to do.

I've worked 4 days now and so the first week is behind me. So far, so good.

The Mind

The mind is a funny thing. Sometimes, I can remember things from way back and as old as I am, I mean way back! Then sometimes, I can’t remember what I said an hour ago. Or if I said it. Did I just think to say it? Anyway, we were watching a movie on HULU.com the other night and it was sponsored by Verizon Wireless. They sang their theme song to the same tune and different words (but almost the same) that Big Red chewing gum used a few years ago was so popular. Maybe they still use it, I don’t know. I have not seen TV that much in a long time.
Anyway, back to the mind. Have you ever got a jingle stuck in your head and could not get it out? Yesterday and today, those songs have been going through mine. Not just one at a time, but the two of them mixed up. Not a pretty sight (sound). I’ve tried singing something else to make it go away. I even tried to sing it and make it go away, but can’t keep the two straight in my head! Whew!
I am just so glad I don’t have to listen or see all those commercials on cable or satellite! Just the little time we are at my parents makes me really happy, we choose not to have TV shows piped into our house. At least on the internet, we can choose to watch the old shows when modesty and non-use of bad words were still virtues to most people.

Prune juice

Where do they get the juice from prunes? There is no juice in prunes. OK, do they get the juice from plums? Shouldn’t it be plum juice? But, then would that be something like plum pretty? Get it? Plum juice. OK, for you non-southerns … plum can mean truly. So, that would be truly juice. Real juice.
OK, this is from Wikipedia “Prune juice is made by softening prunes through steaming and then putting them through a pulper to create a watery puree. Prunes and their "juice" contain the natural laxative dihydrophenylisatin (rela
ted to isatin). Faster results are obtained by heating the prune juice. Prunes also contain dietary fiber (about 6%, or 0.06 g per gram of prune). Prunes and prune juice are thus common home remedies for constipation. Prunes also have a high antioxidant content.”
So…. Prune juice is actually made from prunes. I learned something today. And, yes, we drink prune juice sometimes. And now I know it is plum good for me besides the obvious. :)
